About Deadline

Deadline came to the Hambry newsroom as a temporary summer hire with a plan to get two months of clips, build a portfolio, and move on to a real staff position at a better publication. That was approximately two years ago. She is still a temporary hire. She is still planning to move on. She has not had time to update her resume.

Her notebook contains, at last count, approximately forty investigative leads, none of which she has completed, because each time she begins to close in on one, another arrives that seems more urgent. The file on her laptop titled "tips_to_follow_up_on.txt" is 847 pages long. She has reread it once. It was a mistake.

She is known around the newsroom for her research. Colleagues describe her files as "exhaustive," "possibly too exhaustive," and "the kind of research that ends with you losing the thread of the original story." A story she was assigned on a local zoning dispute ran to 4,200 words and included a sidebar on geological survey methodology. Her editor killed the sidebar. She still has it open in a tab.

Her career was briefly derailed in year one of her tenure when she reported, correctly, that a local official had been lying about his qualifications. The story required eighteen months of follow-up corrections because she kept finding new things. The official had stopped caring by month three. Deadline had not.

She has been nominated for the Wendell Prize for Investigative Reporting, the Harris-Kincaid Fellowship, and the Award for Local Excellence in Accountability Journalism. None of these exist. She genuinely does not know this.

She drinks an amount of coffee that has been informally flagged by the office manager. She does not sleep in a meaningful way. She keeps a spare change of clothes in her desk because she has, on more than one occasion, gone thirty-six hours without leaving the building.

Her colleagues worry about her. She has told them, with evidence, that their concern is statistically overblown. She cited three studies. They stopped asking.

She is filing the next story. She will be right back with you. She will not be right back with you.
