ATHENS, GA – A massive tortoise, identified only as 'Shelly,' who recently staged a dramatic escape from Clarke Central High School, has reportedly cited systemic educational shortcomings as the primary motivation for her bid for freedom. The 150-pound reptile, apprehended after traveling a 'surprising distance' for a creature of her speed, allegedly felt her intellectual and social needs were not being met.
“She’s been complaining about the lack of advanced placement options for several semesters now,” stated a school groundskeeper, who wished to remain anonymous. “Said the history lessons were moving too fast, and the cafeteria greens were ‘uninspired.’ We thought she was just being a typical teenager, but clearly, it was deeper.”
Police, who described the recapture effort as requiring “a lot of muscle” and dealing with a “ridiculously heavy” fugitive, noted Shelly offered no resistance once cornered, instead opting to deliver a lengthy, if slow, monologue about the importance of critical thinking and the need for more diverse elective courses. “She kept asking if we had any philosophy clubs,” reported Officer Brenda Chen, still nursing a strained back. “We just wanted to get her back to her enclosure.”
School officials are now reviewing Shelly's demands, including a petition for a student-led garden and a more robust debate team. The tortoise is expected to face disciplinary action, though her legal team is reportedly preparing a defense based on 'cruel and unusual boredom.'
