AUSTIN, TX — Following an unexpectedly tight primary victory, Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico has issued a bold new dietary pledge, promising to reintroduce meat into his diet if elected. The move, widely seen as an attempt to quell the 'no meat' controversy that dogged his primary campaign, comes with significant caveats that political analysts are calling 'peak Texas Democrat.'
“I understand the concerns of the hardworking Texans who believe a man isn’t truly a man until he’s wrestled a longhorn and then grilled it,” Talarico stated in a press release that inexplicably included a QR code to a vegan chili recipe. “Therefore, I commit to consuming meat in office, but only if it is ethically sourced from small, regenerative farms, where the animals are read bedtime stories and given access to a 401k plan. And it must be grass-fed. And organic. And probably free-range. And definitely not from a factory farm. And ideally, the animal consented.”
The original controversy stemmed from a leaked video showing Talarico politely declining a brisket sandwich at a campaign event, opting instead for a kale salad. Opponents quickly seized on the footage, painting him as out of touch with Texas values. “He wouldn’t even touch the brisket! What kind of Texan is that?” questioned State Senator Buck 'Biff' Johnson (R-Oil Rig), whose campaign slogan is 'God, Guns, and Gravy.'
Political strategist Dr. Penelope Witherbottom, from the University of North Texas’s Department of Applied Absurdity, noted the tightrope Talarico is walking. “He’s trying to appeal to the rural, meat-and-potatoes crowd without alienating his urban, kombucha-and-quinoa base. This ‘ethical meat’ stance is a classic example of trying to make everyone happy, which usually results in making everyone slightly confused.”
Sources close to the campaign confirm that Talarico’s team is currently vetting a network of 'compassionate butchers' and 'animal whisperers' to ensure his future carnivorous endeavors meet his strict ethical guidelines, which reportedly include a mandatory pre-slaughter meditation session for the livestock.
His campaign is also reportedly exploring a line of 'Talarico-approved' beef jerky, made exclusively from cattle that have signed non-disclosure agreements.
