PALO ALTO, CA – DoorDash, a company synonymous with bringing lukewarm pad thai to your doorstep, has announced a groundbreaking new initiative allowing its gig workers to engage in 'Existential Labor,' a series of tasks designed to both train artificial intelligence and profoundly challenge the human condition. The program, which includes activities like 'identifying patterns in the void' and 'contemplating the meaning of a single pixel,' promises to usher in a new era of cognitive exploitation.
“Our Dashers are more than just drivers; they are the unacknowledged legislators of the world’s digital future,” stated DoorDash CEO Tony Xu in a press release that was reportedly generated by an early version of the AI his company is now training. “Why should only Silicon Valley elites get to ponder the deep philosophical implications of data? Now, for a competitive per-task rate, anyone can contribute to the ontological framework of tomorrow’s algorithms.”
Among the new tasks, which pay significantly less than minimum wage when factoring in the inevitable psychological toll, are 'labeling images of abstract concepts,' 'determining if a hot dog is a sandwich (and why),' and 'providing emotional responses to AI-generated poetry.' Uber and Instacart are reportedly exploring similar ventures, with Instacart rumored to be developing a 'Grocery Cart Metaphysics' option.
Dr. Evelyn Reed, a leading expert in digital ethics and the last human to read a terms of service agreement, expressed concern. “This isn’t just about data collection; it’s about outsourcing the very act of thinking to a precarious workforce. Soon, we’ll have an entire generation of gig workers who’ve spent more time teaching a robot how to feel than feeling themselves.”
The company assured users that all existential labor tasks come with a complimentary 10% off coupon for therapy, redeemable after 500 completed assignments.
