LOS ANGELES, CA – XPRIZE, in partnership with Google and Range Media Partners, has announced a global film competition challenging creators to produce optimistic science fiction that carefully avoids any mention of inconvenient truths like rising sea levels, resource depletion, or the general societal collapse currently underway. The "Future Vision XPRIZE" seeks three-minute trailers or short films depicting a tech-enabled tomorrow where humanity has inexplicably thrived without addressing any present-day systemic issues.
“We’re looking for stories where the only conflict is whether the robot butler can perfectly re-create your artisanal kombucha, not whether your city is underwater,” stated Dr. Evelyn Thorne, head of the XPRIZE Narrative Initiative. “The future is bright, provided you don’t look too closely at the data. We want films that reflect that curated optimism.”
Submissions will be judged on their ability to present a visually stunning, technologically advanced future that feels aspirational, yet completely detached from current scientific projections. “Bonus points for sleek, minimalist architecture and self-driving cars that never encounter traffic,” added a Google spokesperson, who declined to be named, citing concerns about their personal carbon footprint.
The competition aims to shift the narrative from dystopian warnings to utopian fantasies, effectively creating a cinematic safe space for tech billionaires. The winning film will receive $3.5 million, enough to fund approximately 0.0001% of a real-world climate solution, or just enough for a very convincing CGI sunset.
