COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – USA Hockey announced today the appointment of Don Granato as head coach for the upcoming IIHF Men's World Championship, a move insiders suggest was less about strategic prowess and more about finding someone who genuinely believes in the power of positive thinking. The organization reportedly sought a leader capable of inspiring a roster primarily composed of players whose NHL teams have already packed it in for the summer.
“We needed someone who could look at a group of guys who just finished their season early and convince them they’re not just here for a participation trophy,” stated USA Hockey’s Director of Recreational Ice Sports, Chad ‘The Puck’ Peterson. “Don’s enthusiasm is infectious. He genuinely thinks we can win with a roster that, frankly, looks like a fantasy team drafted by someone who fell asleep halfway through.”
Granato, known for his upbeat demeanor, reportedly accepted the position with a rousing speech about the ‘boundless potential of the human spirit’ and ‘the magic of the underdog story,’ which was met with polite applause and several players checking their phones for flight schedules. One anonymous player, fresh off a 100-loss season, commented, “I mean, it’s nice to hear, I guess. My main goal is not to get injured before my summer golf league starts.”
The coaching staff is reportedly already developing innovative strategies, including a ‘surprise’ line change every 30 seconds and a power play formation designed to confuse opponents by simply having too many guys on the ice. The team’s first practice reportedly involved a motivational seminar and a trust fall exercise, followed by 15 minutes of light skating. Granato remains confident, telling reporters, “We’re not just going to compete; we’re going to inspire. And maybe, just maybe, win a game or two.”
USA Hockey officials are now reportedly searching for an assistant coach who specializes in finding lost luggage and boosting morale after inevitable early-round exits.
