LITTLE ROCK, AR – In a groundbreaking advancement for law enforcement training, the Little Rock Police Department has unveiled an updated de-escalation simulation featuring a highly anticipated 'Just Kidding' button. The new functionality, integrated into their virtual reality training program, allows officers to instantly reframe any simulated encounter that goes awry as a lighthearted misunderstanding.
“This isn’t about avoiding accountability,” stated Chief Randall 'Randy' McMurty at a press conference, adjusting his tie. “It’s about equipping our officers with the psychological tools to manage complex situations. Sometimes, after a high-stress incident, everyone just needs to know it was all in good fun.” The button, prominently displayed on the virtual control panel, triggers a pre-recorded audio loop of the officer saying, “Whoops, my bad! Just kidding!” followed by a generic laugh track.
According to Dr. Evelyn Thorne, lead developer of the simulation, the feature is designed to reduce post-incident stress for officers. “We found that the emotional burden of a simulated escalation was counterproductive,” Thorne explained. “Now, if a virtual suspect ends up in a virtual headlock, the officer can simply hit 'Just Kidding,' and the simulation resets with everyone smiling. It’s a powerful psychological release.”
Critics argue the new feature trivializes serious incidents. However, Chief McMurty insists it’s about 'modernizing the narrative.' He added, “In today’s world, perception is everything. And sometimes, the best de-escalation is a well-timed, retroactive joke.”
