SHREVEPORT, LA – Shreve Memorial Library announced today the launch of its groundbreaking 'Read Around The World' program, an initiative designed to broaden horizons and foster global understanding. However, the program faced immediate logistical challenges after organizers discovered the library’s international section primarily consisted of a single, dog-eared copy of 'Louisiana History: A Comprehensive Guide' and a 1987 travel brochure for Cancun.
“Our vision was grand,” stated Library Director Brenda Jenkins, valiantly attempting to project enthusiasm while gesturing vaguely towards an empty shelf labeled 'Global Narratives.' “We wanted to transport our patrons through literature to the bustling streets of Tokyo, the ancient ruins of Rome, the vibrant markets of Marrakech. Turns out, our budget mostly allowed for books about, well, Shreveport.”
Patrons eager to embark on literary journeys were reportedly met with a selection heavily skewed towards regional biographies, local fishing guides, and an extensive collection of taxidermy manuals. “I asked for something from France,” recounted local resident Earl 'The Bookworm' Peterson, adjusting his spectacles. “They offered me a cookbook for Cajun boudin. It’s delicious, don’t get me wrong, but I’m pretty sure France is a different country.”
A library spokesperson, who wished to remain anonymous, admitted that the program’s title might have been 'aspirational.' “We’re hoping to secure grants for, you know, actual books from other countries. Until then, we’re encouraging patrons to 'read around the world' by imagining their favorite local characters traveling abroad.” The library is now considering renaming the program 'Read Around The Greater Shreveport Area, With Occasional Detours To Neighboring Parishes.'
