CHARLOTTE, NC – Following a decisive 124-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, the Charlotte Hornets have announced the immediate implementation of a new 'Participation Trophy' program, designed to recognize the commendable effort of any team that manages to complete a full 48 minutes of basketball against them.
“We understand that showing up is half the battle, especially when you’re facing a squad like ours,” stated Hornets interim Assistant to the Regional Manager of Fan Engagement, Chad Billingsley, at a press conference held courtside. “It takes real courage to put on those uniforms, tie your shoes, and, you know, dribble the ball a few times. We believe that level of commitment deserves formal recognition.”
The inaugural 'Hornets' Challenger's Commendation' will be a small, tasteful plaque featuring a miniature basketball and the inscription: 'You Played. That’s Something.' Sources close to the organization suggest the initiative was inspired by recent dominant performances, which have left several opposing teams looking, in the words of one anonymous Hornets player, “like they’d rather be anywhere else, possibly even stuck in traffic on I-77.”
Critics have argued that the award might undermine the competitive spirit of the league. However, Billingsley was quick to dismiss such concerns. “Look, not everyone can be a winner,” he explained, polishing a prototype trophy with his sleeve. “But everyone can be a participant. And in today’s NBA, that’s a pretty low bar to clear, frankly.”
The league is reportedly reviewing the new award for potential violations of competitive integrity, while several other teams are said to be quietly asking if they can get one too, just for making it through the season.
