SAN FRANCISCO – A coalition of the world's most prominent AI developers, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI founder Elon Musk, today issued an urgent plea for a global slowdown in artificial intelligence research, citing an existential threat to humanity that somehow only their companies are equipped to mitigate. The unprecedented show of unity among rival billionaires comes as their own AI models continue to advance at breakneck speeds, threatening to... well, threaten.

The joint statement, signed by dozens of tech executives who collectively own more private jets than they do publicly traded shares of competitors, called for an immediate "pause" on all AI development above a certain computational threshold. "The risks are too great, the stakes too high," proclaimed the document, conveniently omitting that their collective fear largely involves the possibility of a smaller, nimbler competitor developing an AGI before they do. Or, worse, one of their current, less-wealthy employees spinning off to do it.

A spokesperson for the newly formed "AI Self-Preservation & Market Dominance Council" (ASPMDC), Dr. Phil Ennui, clarified the initiative. "It's about ensuring humanity's future, by which we mean a future where our current market cap isn't just a quaint historical footnote," Ennui stated, adjusting a lapel pin that read 'Doomer for Dollars.' "We envision a period of reflection, a thoughtful intermission, during which we can consolidate our lead and ensure all future existential threats are conveniently funneled through our proprietary ecosystems."

The proposed "slowdown" involves an immediate moratorium on any AI development not currently funded by, or directly benefiting, existing ASPMDC members. This "controlled deceleration," as they termed it, would allow the founding members to "fine-tune safety protocols" – a process insiders suggest involves securing every last top-tier researcher and patent before anyone else gets a bright idea. "Think of it as a strategic timeout," explained Dr. Ennui, "like when a basketball team calls a timeout because the other team is scoring too much. We need to regroup, reassess, and perhaps even lobby for some rule changes that only benefit the home team."

Industry analysts noted the proposal bears a striking resemblance to a cartel agreement, only with the added gravitas of potential robot overlords. "It's pure 'stop the steal' for intellectual property," observed Dr. Brenda Cyber, a leading researcher in digital ethics at the Institute for Aspirational Proximity Studies. "They're not worried about AI destroying humanity; they're worried about someone else's AI getting more VC funding."

The tech giants emphasized that any global "pause" would, of course, be overseen by a diverse panel of experts — exclusively consisting of the same guys currently issuing the warnings, along with a few of their golf buddies who happen to own major investment firms. They assured the public that these measures were solely for public benefit, and had absolutely nothing to do with ensuring their next round of funding gets a higher valuation.

The entire "AI Doomsday Clock" apparently has a snooze button, and only these guys know where it is – and how to make money from pressing it.
