ACC officials announced today that watching the highly anticipated Syracuse vs. SMU men’s basketball game will now require a bespoke viewing package, designed to 'enhance the fan experience' by making it an 'unforgettable quest.' Viewers will first need a standard cable subscription, followed by a Tier-3 ACC Network Extra+ streaming package, accessible only through a geo-locked VPN routed through a server physically located within the tournament arena itself.
“We believe true fandom is earned, not given,” stated Bartholomew 'Barty' Streamwell, Head of Content Monetization for the Atlantic Coast Conference. “The days of simply turning on a TV are over. Our data shows that fans derive immense satisfaction from overcoming logistical hurdles, much like a point guard navigating a full-court press.” Streamwell added that a recent fan survey indicated an overwhelming desire for 'more hoops, fewer easy buttons.'
Further complicating matters, viewers must also correctly answer a three-part trivia question about obscure ACC mascots and offer a small, symbolic blood sacrifice to the 'Spirit of the Hardwood' 30 minutes before tip-off. “It’s about engagement,” explained Dr. Evelyn Porthos, a sports media anthropologist. “The more barriers to entry, the more valuable the content feels. Plus, it’s a great way to filter out the casuals.”
Sources close to the league suggest that next season, fans may be required to physically attend a different, less popular sporting event as a prerequisite to stream major ACC contests.
