ROME – Poste Italiane SpA, Italy’s national postal service, announced today its ambitious plan to acquire Telecom Italia SpA in a deal valued at €10.8 billion. The unprecedented move is expected to culminate in the delisting of the former phone monopoly and its complete integration into a nationwide, avian-powered communication network.
“We believe the future of telecommunications lies in the past,” stated a surprisingly earnest Dr. Silvio Gabbiano, newly appointed Head of Avian Logistics for Poste Italiane. “While fiber optics are fast, they lack the charm and inherent biodegradability of a well-trained homing pigeon. This acquisition allows us to pivot away from unreliable digital signals and embrace a truly organic, artisanal messaging system.”
The plan involves dismantling existing Telecom Italia infrastructure, repurposing copper wires for art installations, and converting central offices into state-of-the-art pigeon lofts. Customers will reportedly receive a starter kit including a small message capsule, a detailed guide on pigeon care, and a complimentary bag of birdseed.
Industry analysts are cautiously optimistic. “It’s certainly… a strategy,” commented Ms. Roberta Piccione, a telecommunications consultant who requested anonymity due to her current employment with a major internet provider. “On the one hand, it’s a bold rejection of modernity. On the other, who among us hasn’t wished their email could be delivered by a fluffy, cooing messenger?”
Poste Italiane anticipates full operational capacity within three to five years, or whenever the first generation of carrier pigeons can consistently navigate rush hour traffic.
