PALM BEACH, FL – In a stunning upset that has political analysts scrambling to understand the nuances of local literacy, residents of Florida House District 87 have inadvertently elected Democrat Emily Gregory, reportedly after a significant portion of the electorate mistook their ballots for a restaurant menu.
The district, a known stronghold for former President Donald Trump, saw Republican Jon Maples, who enjoyed a robust endorsement from Mar-a-Lago, lose by a narrow margin. Sources close to the election process indicate that many voters, accustomed to high-end dining, selected the 'D' next to Gregory's name, believing it signified a 'Delicious' option, while the 'R' next to Maples was interpreted as 'Regular' or 'Rancid.'
“I just figured 'D' was the premium choice, like for a prime cut of steak or a particularly exquisite vintage,” explained local resident Muffy St. Clair, 78, adjusting her diamond-encrusted reading glasses. “I always go for the 'D' on the menu. It usually means more truffle oil.”
Political strategist Skip Harrington, who specializes in voter behavior in affluent communities, confirmed the hypothesis. “We’ve seen this before in areas where the average daily caloric intake is measured in caviar spoons,” Harrington stated. “Voters here are conditioned to associate 'D' with desirability. It’s a Pavlovian response to luxury. Frankly, we're surprised it took this long for a Democrat to accidentally slip through.”
Maples’ campaign manager, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed frustration. “We spent millions on messaging, on rallies, on getting the former President to personally vouch for Jon. Turns out, all we needed was to rebrand 'Republican' as 'Decadent' or 'Divine.' It’s a learning curve.”
Gregory, meanwhile, has reportedly begun reviewing local zoning laws, unaware of the culinary misunderstanding that propelled her to office, but is reportedly open to adding more truffle fries to school lunch programs.
