PENDLETON, OR – In a bold move to combat what they term a 'canine inventory surplus,' the Pendleton Animal Shelter announced today a groundbreaking 'Buy One Get One Free' adoption special on all dogs over six months old. The initiative, effective immediately, aims to rehome animals at an accelerated pace, with shelter management admitting they're running out of creative ways to describe 'lovable mutts' on social media.
“We’ve tried everything – themed adoption days, emotional appeals, even dressing them in tiny hats,” stated Brenda Pawsley, Shelter Operations Director, her voice barely audible over a chorus of barks. “But at the end of the day, we have more dogs than people willing to take them, and frankly, our ‘forever home’ quota is starting to look more like a ‘for now home’ situation.”
The shelter anticipates a surge in adoptions, particularly from individuals who may have only considered one dog but are now presented with the irresistible opportunity for a 'two-for-one' pet package. Critics, however, question the long-term implications of such a deal. Dr. Reginald Barksworth, a local veterinarian, expressed concern. “While I applaud their ingenuity, I worry about the sudden influx of multi-dog households. We could see a spike in everything from leash tangles to existential crises among owners trying to decide which dog gets the last chew toy.”
Under the new program, adopters will still undergo the standard screening process, ensuring that while they may be getting a bargain, they are still committed to providing a loving environment for both their impulse-adopted canines. The shelter has also hinted at a potential 'three-for-the-price-of-two' cat promotion if the current dog deal proves successful.
Area residents are reportedly weighing the pros and cons of doubling their daily walk commitments versus the undeniable allure of a free second best friend.
