VICTORIA, TX – Victoria County Animal Services marked National Puppy Day yesterday with a series of adoption events and foster recruitment drives, largely to underscore the fact that they are, in no uncertain terms, absolutely swimming in dogs. The annual celebration, intended to highlight the joy of puppies, inadvertently served as a stark reminder that the shelter’s kennels are currently at a 'comfortably overflowing' capacity.
“We love puppies, truly, we do,” stated Brenda Pawsley, Director of Canine Operations, while attempting to disentangle herself from a wriggling pile of seven-week-old terriers. “But every day is National Puppy Day here, and frankly, we’re running out of floor space for the adults. The puppies are cute, sure, but they grow. And then they’re just… dogs. And we have a lot of those.”
The shelter reported a modest uptick in adoptions during the event, primarily of the smaller, more photogenic specimens. However, officials noted a significant number of larger, less Instagram-friendly dogs were left contemplating their life choices from behind kennel bars. One long-term resident, a three-year-old Labrador mix named 'Buster,' was reportedly heard sighing audibly as another family walked past his enclosure, cooing at a chihuahua puppy.
“The goal is always to find forever homes,” explained Dr. Amelia Barkins, a local veterinarian and shelter volunteer, adjusting her glasses as a bulldog puppy attempted to chew her shoelaces. “But sometimes it feels like we’re just rotating the inventory. We adopt out three, and then a new litter of ten shows up on the doorstep. It’s a beautiful, furry, slightly overwhelming cycle.”
In a last-ditch effort, the shelter is now considering rebranding National Puppy Day as 'National Please Take One Of These Dogs So We Can Fit More Puppies Day' for next year.
