ACCRA – In a move designed to "elevate the player journey and stakeholder confidence," the Ghanaian Premier League (GPL) today unveiled an optional "Safety Premium" package for all club teams, following the recent death of Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong in a suspected armed robbery. Available for an additional annual fee ranging from GHS 50,000 to GHS 150,000, the new offering promises enhanced transit security measures including reinforced, tinted windows, onboard "risk mitigation specialists" with Level 3 Threat Diversion certification, and GPS-tracked routes optimized for "brand protection and uninterrupted match-day revenue streams."
GPL Commissioner Anya Nkrumah emphasized the league's commitment to "player experience innovation" and "club empowerment." "We understand that our teams operate in diverse and dynamic environments, and while baseline safety protocols remain in place, the Safety Premium allows clubs to truly customize their security posture to reflect their unique brand values and competitive ambitions," Nkrumah stated in a press release disseminated across sponsored 2 channels. "It’s about offering choice, much like selecting a premium cabin upgrade on a transatlantic flight, but for vital ground transportation. We believe this tiered, market-driven approach reflects the modern realities of competitive professional 2 in a fiscally responsible manner."
Sources within the league's newly formed "Incident Response & Brand Upliftment" division confirmed that the decision came after extensive internal "synergy sessions" and risk assessment workshops that identified "unmitigated negative publicity exposure" as a primary concern. "Frankly, deploying a comprehensive, fully funded security detail for every single team on every single away game is simply not economically sustainable from a long-term equity holder perspective," admitted Kwasi Mensah, head of Commercial Resiliency, during a private stakeholder briefing. "The Safety Premium provides an elegant, scalable solution. Clubs that opt in demonstrate superior commitment to their human capital assets and, crucially, help the league manage the perception of, shall we say, 'unforeseen operational friction' without impacting dividend projections."
The new package also includes a "Crisis Communications Lite" module, designed to help clubs craft 2 messaging that is "empathetic yet forward-looking" and compliant with the GPL's "Brand Resilience Playbook" in the event of future "operational friction." Teams opting for the top-tier "Executive Safety Platinum" will receive a dedicated media liaison for a full 72-hour post-incident support window, alongside a complimentary set of branded "Solidarity Stickers" for team buses. An "Enhanced Player Wellness Micro-Certificate" program, focusing on resilience and media engagement, is also being developed as part of the premium offering.
Clubs failing to opt into the Safety Premium will continue to rely on existing, baseline security protocols, described internally as "historical standard operating procedures" which include "the earnest hope that nothing untoward occurs and a strong reliance on localized community goodwill initiatives." The league confirmed that a portion of the Safety Premium revenue would be reinvested into developing a "next-generation digital memorial wall" accessible via the official GPL app.
The league projects a 15% increase in annual revenue from the new offering, with player safety expected to see "corresponding qualitative improvements that enhance brand equity."
