NEW YORK – CBS Sports has unveiled a groundbreaking new format for its nightly sports recap, 'The Nightly Sports Call,' which will now consist solely of a single, unnamed individual audibly sighing into a telephone for 30 minutes. The network claims this innovative approach, effective immediately, offers a more authentic and relatable experience for its audience.
“We’ve done extensive market research,” stated Brenda Holloway, CBS’s Head of Audience Disappointment Metrics. “And what we found is that after a long day of watching their teams underperform, most fans aren’t looking for analysis. They’re looking for validation of their existential dread. A good, solid sigh just hits different.”
Critics of the previous format, which involved actual sports highlights and expert commentary, praised the shift. “Frankly, all the talking was exhausting,” said long-time viewer Gary 'The Gloom' Peterson, 57. “Now, I just put it on, hear that deep, resonant exhale, and I know someone out there understands my pain. It’s almost therapeutic.”
The network confirmed that while the sighing will be live, there will be no interactive elements or fan call-ins, as “adding more voices would just dilute the pure, unadulterated essence of sports-induced despair.” Future plans include a premium subscription tier offering different sigh tonalities, including 'disappointed,' 'resigned,' and 'why do I even bother?'
