DURHAM, NC – In a move lauded by some as pragmatic and criticized by others as 'just giving up,' the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) today announced that the Duke Blue Devils men's basketball program will be permanently awarded the ACC Tournament Championship trophy, effective immediately. The decision follows Duke's recent victory over Virginia, marking their second consecutive title under coach Jon Scheyer and their third in four years.

“Frankly, it’s just more efficient this way,” stated ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, wiping a single tear from his eye during a press conference held in a dimly lit conference room. “Every year, we go through the motions, the travel, the TV rights, the emotional rollercoaster for fans… and then Duke wins. It’s like Groundhog Day, but with more corporate sponsorships and fewer adorable rodents.”

The new policy dictates that the annual ACC Tournament will now serve as a 'competitive exhibition' for the remaining 14 teams, culminating in a 'Runner-Up Invitational' where the second-best team will be awarded a participation ribbon and a stern talking-to about their life choices. Duke, meanwhile, will host a televised 'Trophy Acceptance Gala' featuring a highlight reel of their previous wins and a performance by a local high school jazz band.

“It’s a bold new era for ACC basketball,” added Phillips, gesturing vaguely at a projection of a Duke logo. “We’re embracing the future, where the outcome is known, and the only suspense is whether Coach Scheyer will wear a tie or a quarter-zip.”

Sources close to the conference suggest the move was also influenced by declining viewership for games not featuring Duke, as well as a memo from ESPN inquiring if they could just pre-record the Duke championship segments.
