TOKYO – In a bold new initiative to truly globalize baseball, the World Baseball Classic (WBC) organizing committee today unveiled plans for a new 'Participation Trophy' division for the 2026 tournament. This groundbreaking category will allow nations with limited baseball infrastructure or a severe lack of eligible players to still compete, primarily against each other, in a series of exhibition matches where the final score is 'everyone's a winner.'
“We understand that not every country has the robust farm system of, say, the Dominican Republic, or the sheer number of eligible MLB players as the United States,” stated WBC Commissioner Hiroshi Tanaka, unveiling a miniature, non-breakable plastic trophy. “This new division ensures that even if your national team consists of three semi-pro players, a retired accountant, and a guy who vaguely remembers playing tee-ball, you still get to wear a uniform and feel the thrill of international competition.”
Critics have questioned whether this dilutes the competitive spirit of the WBC. However, proponents argue it’s a necessary step to foster goodwill and provide compelling content for late-night streaming services. “Think of the human interest stories!” exclaimed marketing director Brenda Chen. “The plucky underdog from a nation where baseball is played exclusively on PlayStation. It’s gold!”
The inaugural 'Participation Trophy' division is expected to feature teams from nations where 'baseball' translates roughly to 'stick and ball game, maybe?', with organizers promising a 'spirited, if not entirely skilled,' display of athleticism.
Sources close to the committee suggest the next logical step might be a division for countries that don’t even know what baseball is, but are willing to give it a shot for the free travel.
