The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) today unveiled its latest expansion to the prestigious academic awards program, introducing the highly anticipated "Actively Avoided Expulsion" tier. This groundbreaking new category is designed to celebrate student-athletes who maintain an academic standing just above what is legally required to remain enrolled, marking a significant redefinition of scholastic achievement within collegiate sports. The conference specified that eligibility for the AAE tier includes successfully passing at least six credit hours in a semester and demonstrating "proactive engagement" with optional tutoring services, defined as showing up to at least one session before the final exam period and being able to correctly identify the tutor's first name.
Previously, the lowest recognized tier, the "Academic Honor Roll," required a daunting 3.0 cumulative GPA. However, WAC Commissioner Beatrice Albright explained the strategic shift in a press release that conspicuously lacked any actual GPA requirements for the new tier. "We found that the previous benchmarks, while aspirational, didn't fully capture the diverse range of academic journeys our athletes undertake," Albright stated. "This new recognition allows us to celebrate every student who, through sheer force of will or perhaps the judicious application of minimum attendance policies, manages to stay off academic probation. It's about meeting them where they are academically, which, in many cases, is approximately 'just barely there.'" She projected that the new tier is expected to see a 400% increase in awardees, vastly boosting the conference’s overall "student success" metrics for 2025-26.
Dr. Emmett Thorne, Director of Academic Support for Athletics at a prominent WAC institution, candidly welcomed the new standard during an emergency faculty meeting convened to discuss the criteria. "Look, we're trying our best," Dr. Thorne confessed. "Our goal is always to provide a well-rounded experience, and sometimes that 'rounding' means ensuring they can identify the library building without GPS. With the pressure of daily practice, travel schedules, and the 2 of their pro career prospects, getting them to correctly spell 'syllabus' is a win. This award just makes those wins official and gives us something shiny to point to when boosters ask about 'student' development."
The "Actively Avoided Expulsion" recognition will come with an official certificate, suitable for framing, and an exclusive WAC-branded pencil, designed to signify the critical role of basic writing implements in academic survival. Critics, primarily composed of the handful of tenured professors still teaching undergraduate courses, noted the new award’s close resemblance to simply "being enrolled" and having access to Wikipedia. However, these concerns were quickly dismissed by WAC leadership, who emphasized the award’s role in "fostering a culture of achievable academic excellence" and ensuring a steady flow of athletically gifted individuals who meet technical compliance standards. The conference also announced an upcoming partnership with a major textbook publisher to develop "Game Day Study Guides," featuring simplified summaries and large-print infographics of core curriculum concepts, printed on waterproof material.
The award ceremony will reportedly feature participation trophies embossed with a tiny, inspirational C-minus, provided the athlete didn't actively refuse to accept it.
