AUSTIN, TX – South by Southwest (SXSW) today unveiled its highly anticipated film slate for the 2028 festival, two full years ahead of schedule, citing a growing demand for 'pre-emptive cultural engagement.' The announcement includes 30 feature films, 15 episodic pilots, and a groundbreaking interactive VR experience that currently exists only as a concept in a Google Doc.
“We understand that in today’s fast-paced content ecosystem, audiences need to know what they’ll be excited about well in advance,” stated Brenda 'Breezy' Carmichael, SXSW's Head of Future Programming and Temporal Foresight. “By announcing 2028’s lineup now, we’re giving tastemakers and industry insiders ample time to generate buzz, secure distribution deals for films that don't have scripts yet, and, most importantly, book their Airbnbs for March 2028.”
Among the projected highlights are a 'groundbreaking' documentary about a band that hasn't formed yet, a 'disruptive' comedy from an emerging talent currently in middle school, and a 'poignant' drama exploring the societal impact of a technology that will be invented next year. Critics are already calling the lineup 'bold,' 'visionary,' and 'a contractual obligation.'
Early bird badges for SXSW 2028 are expected to go on sale by Q4 2024, with premium access tiers offering exclusive virtual reality tours of the yet-to-be-built festival venues. Organizers confirmed that the 2026 and 2027 lineups will be announced retrospectively, sometime in 2029.
