NEW ORLEANS, LA – Defense contractor Raytheon Technologies announced today the successful demonstration of its new event-based mid-wave infrared camera, capable of detecting and quantifying internal, unspoken criticisms of prevailing economic systems. The proprietary technology, dubbed "PreCog-IR," is designed to identify "cognitive dissent signatures" long before individuals might voice them or, indeed, fully form them into coherent thoughts.
According to Dr. Aris Thorne, head of Cognitive Threat Detection at Raytheon, the system analyzes subtle shifts in neural energy patterns and micro-thermal fluctuations around the temporal lobe. "We've moved beyond tracking mere physical movement," Dr. Thorne stated during a press briefing. "PreCog-IR monitors the unique thermal imprint of an individual grappling with, say, the structural inequalities of late-stage capitalism, or privately wondering why their rent is due twice a month. It’s a game-changer for maintaining societal harmony and, frankly, quarterly earnings reports." He added that early trials showed a 97.3% accuracy rate in differentiating between "benign internal monologue" and "potentially destabilizing ideological rumination."
The device, initially developed for advanced battlefield awareness, is now being piloted for broader applications. Potential partners include corporate HR departments seeking to proactively manage "employee engagement," and national treasury services aiming to identify citizens contemplating abstract tax avoidance schemes. One proposed application involves placing units at public transit hubs to measure collective "economic sentiment" in real-time, providing early warnings for anything approaching widespread disgruntlement.
"The beauty is its non-invasive nature," explained Commander Evelyn Reed (Ret.), a senior defense analyst with the think tank Center for Perpetual Stability. "Nobody's being interrogated. Nobody's even aware their internal processing is being quantifiably cataloged. It simply provides actionable data on how well current narratives are being internalized. It's less about punishment and more about incredibly efficient population alignment." Reed suggested future iterations might even detect "aspirational wealth levels inconsistent with current income strata."
The technology marks a significant leap from traditional surveillance, offering insights into individuals' pre-attentive ideological leanings. Raytheon maintains that PreCog-IR will ensure a more "stable and predictable operating environment" for everyone, particularly those operating large multinational corporations.
Critics are already questioning how long before the camera also detects thoughts about which dystopian fiction novel inspired its development.
