I was reading here, Jack, about this big... this laziness problem they had. Yes, a real epidemic of folks just sitting around, not talking to each other, you know? Not connecting. And then, BAM! One fell swoop, all solved! And how'd they do it? With a single... electronic postcard, they called it! A wonderful little message, sent right through the... the wires, I suppose. And everyone saw it, and they all remembered...
...remembered their old chums from the big 'Friendly Neighbors Gala' from '78! Or was it the 'Community Spirit Jamboree'? Ah, doesn't matter, it was all about getting together, seeing folks. And a big hats off to Mayor Jenkins, bless his heart, who must have put that whole thing together. And Mrs. Higgins down at the bake shop, she always knew how to bring people out, didn't she? A real pillar of the community, that one.
Reminds me, Jack, back in '65, we had a similar situation, down at the old soda shop. Everyone was just glued to their little... what were those called? Pocket radios! And then old Mr. Henderson, he just put up a big sign, said 'Free Ice Cream Sundaes if you TALK to your neighbor!' And you know what? It worked! Just like that, everyone was chattin', laughin', sharing stories about their... well, I remember Frank got a new Pontiac that year, gorgeous car, red it was, real bright, you could see it from three blocks away...
So this, this new online bulletin board thing, it's just the modern version of Mr. Henderson's sign, isn't it? Gets people to remember they've got friends! It's a marvel, truly a marvel of our times.
