LOS ANGELES — Hollywood is buzzing with the news that Ryan Coogler, a director of some renown, will be present at this evening's 96th Academy Awards. Mr. Coogler, who has previously directed several well-received films, is expected to be a supportive presence for his wife, Zinzi Coogler, who is herself a nominee for Best Original Song.
“It’s truly inspiring to see a man stand by his wife’s side during such a monumental career moment,” remarked veteran awards pundit Brenda Sterling. “Often, the partners of successful women in Hollywood are content to remain in the shadows, but Mr. Coogler is clearly breaking that mold by simply showing up.” Sterling added that his attendance “really puts a human face on the often-overlooked role of the supportive spouse.”
While Mr. Coogler has his own nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, sources close to the couple indicate his primary focus remains on his wife’s potential win. “He’s just so proud of her,” said a production assistant who once held a door for Mr. Coogler. “He’s always saying things like, ‘Go get ‘em, honey,’ or ‘Don’t forget your speech, sweetie.’ It’s really quite touching.”
Academy officials have confirmed that Mr. Coogler will be seated near his wife, ensuring he’s within arm’s reach should she need a congratulatory pat on the back or perhaps a reminder of where she left her clutch. The Academy is reportedly considering a new category for 'Best Supporting Spouse' in future ceremonies, with Mr. Coogler already a front-runner.
