WASHINGTON D.C. — In a move designed to stabilize local economies and ensure cultural cohesion, the newly established Federal Department of Artistic Predictability (FDAP) today announced a nationwide mandate requiring all regional theaters to include "Seussical The Musical" in their annual programming. The decree, effective immediately, stipulates a minimum 17-week run for the popular Dr. Seuss adaptation, aiming to provide "reliable, intergenerational entertainment infrastructure."
"We've seen the data," stated Dr. Alistair Finch, Undersecretary for Public Arts Recirculation at FDAP, during a press briefing held in front of a rotating digital billboard displaying animated Cat in the Hat imagery. "Community surveys consistently show that what the American public truly craves is an experience it already knows. 'Seussical' provides a baseline level of recognizable intellectual property, minimizing audience cognitive load and maximizing pre-sold nostalgia units. It's not about *if* a community needs theater; it's about *which* theater will guarantee a consistent 11.7% bump in local ice cream sales and a 3.2% increase in themed merchandise revenue."
Theater companies nationwide, many of whom have already produced "Seussical" multiple times in the last decade, are now scrambling to adjust their artistic calendars. "Honestly, we just finished our third run last month," confessed Brenda Maxwell, artistic director of the Aberdeen Community Players, wiping glitter from her brow. "But the FDAP guidelines are quite clear about the 'non-negotiable artistic cornerstone' designation. We've even been granted a federal subsidy of $750 to re-evaluate our 'Horton Hears a Who' costume maintenance protocols for the upcoming, fourth run." Maxwell added that the company is exploring innovative ways to differentiate this year's production, including "potentially using slightly different shades of green for the Grinch."
Critics lauded the initiative for its no-nonsense approach to cultural sustainability. "For too long, regional theater has been plagued by the unpredictable whims of 'original thought' and 'challenging narratives'," wrote cultural pundit Genevieve Sterling in her widely syndicated column, "The Stage is Not Your Therapy." "This mandate puts an end to that dangerous experimentation. We need foundational, proven stories that don't alienate anyone and reliably feature a talking elephant. It’s a bold step towards ensuring that our nation’s artistic output remains safely within the parameters of pre-approved, financially viable wonder." The FDAP noted that similar mandates for annual 'Wizard of Oz' and 'Annie' productions are currently undergoing feasibility studies.
Industry analysts predict a sharp rise in green eggs and ham consumption, while federal agents are reportedly training to identify and address any instances of unauthorized original choreography.
