NEW YORK, NY — Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz has issued a dire warning that artificial intelligence, in its insatiable quest for data, could degrade the world’s 'information ecosystem' by churning out 'garbage.' The announcement has left many observers scratching their heads, wondering what exactly Stiglitz believed the internet’s comment sections were before AI arrived.
“He seemed genuinely surprised,” reported Dr. Evelyn Thorne, a research fellow at the Institute for Digital Decay, who was present at the briefing. “He kept saying things like, ‘But the nuance! The thoughtful discourse!’ We had to gently remind him that, for the past two decades, the internet’s primary contribution to human knowledge has been thinly veiled racism and arguments about whether a hot dog is a sandwich.”
Stiglitz elaborated that AI-generated content could overwhelm traditional media, leading to a further erosion of truth. “Imagine a world where every news article is followed by a thousand AI-written comments, each more nonsensical than the last,” he reportedly mused, apparently unaware that this scenario has been the lived reality for human social media managers since approximately 2012.
Sources close to the economist suggest he may have been operating under the impression that online comments were previously curated by a panel of benevolent, highly educated individuals. He is now reportedly considering a follow-up study on whether the sky is, in fact, blue.
