WASHINGTON D.C. – In a move that has left league executives both bewildered and slightly impressed, newly acquired Washington Wizards guard Trae Young was ejected from Monday night's game against the Houston Rockets for leaving the bench. The incident occurred despite Young not being officially active for the Wizards, making his debut for the team still several days away.
Sources close to the situation indicate Young, who was merely observing from the sidelines, may have been overcome with a surge of pre-emptive team camaraderie. "He just really wanted to feel like part of the team, you know?" offered a league insider, who requested anonymity to discuss Young's 'over-the-top' integration efforts. "He saw a loose ball, and I guess his instincts just took over. He wasn't even wearing a uniform, just a very enthusiastic tracksuit."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, speaking from an undisclosed location, stated, "While we appreciate Mr. Young's eagerness to contribute, even hypothetically, the rules regarding bench decorum apply to all personnel, active or otherwise. We understand the excitement of a fresh start, but one must first *start* before one can be *ejected* from it." The league is reportedly considering adding a new clause to the rulebook specifically addressing 'pre-game, pre-team, pre-active bench-leaving.'
Young's agent, Rich Paul, declined to comment, reportedly still trying to explain to his client that he can't get fined for a team he hasn't officially joined yet, but also, he absolutely can.
