HOLLYWOOD, CA – Veteran actor Cary Elwes has reportedly been inconsolable following the recent, non-existent passing of acclaimed director Rob Reiner. Elwes, best known for his role in Reiner's 1987 classic 'The Princess Bride,' posted a heartfelt tribute on social media Friday, marking what he believed was Reiner's first posthumous birthday.
Sources close to Elwes, who spoke on condition of anonymity, indicated the actor had been relying on 'a quick Google search' to verify Reiner's status. “He typed in 'Rob Reiner' and saw a few articles about his past work, then one headline that just said 'Legendary Director Dies,' and he put two and two together,” explained publicist Brenda Walsh, referring to a 2017 article about Reiner's mother, Estelle Reiner, who passed away in 2008. “It’s a common mistake, especially when you’re busy being a beloved cultural icon yourself.”
The incident has sent shockwaves through Hollywood, primarily among those who had to explain to Elwes that Reiner is, in fact, still very much alive and recently active on social media. Reiner himself reportedly responded to the tribute with a simple, 'Thanks, I think?' followed by an emoji of a confused face.
“This isn’t about Rob Reiner’s mortality,” stated Dr. Evelyn Hayes, a digital information ethicist at UCLA. “This is about the fragile ecosystem of celebrity remembrance and the devastating impact of not scrolling past the first page of search results. Who is the real victim here? The living director, or the actor whose heartfelt grief was tragically misplaced?”
Elwes has since deleted the post, reportedly after being informed by his agent that Reiner had just tweeted about his morning coffee.
