PEORIA, IL – Bradley University has unveiled a new annual award, the 'Almost Champions' Trophy, in recognition of the women’s basketball team’s valiant effort that culminated in a one-point loss during the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinals. The team, which mounted a significant comeback before ultimately falling short, will be the inaugural recipients of the prestigious honor.
“This isn’t just about winning,” stated Athletic Director Brenda Halpert at a press conference, adjusting a commemorative 'Almost There' banner. “It’s about the journey, the grit, the sheer audacity to believe you could pull it off, right up until the final buzzer. That’s the kind of resilience we want to instill in our student-athletes: the ability to almost achieve greatness.”
The university plans to commission a bronze statue depicting a player looking thoughtfully at a scoreboard displaying a one-point deficit. Sources within the athletic department suggest the statue will be placed prominently in front of the arena, serving as a constant reminder that success isn't always about the final score, but about how close you got to it.
“We’re teaching our students that sometimes, the most impactful victories are the moral ones,” added Dr. Alistair Finch, a sports sociologist hired by the university to consult on the initiative. “It’s about the narrative. And frankly, a dramatic near-win is often more compelling than a boring, decisive victory. It gives us more to talk about at the booster dinners.”
The team’s coach, who preferred to remain anonymous, reportedly expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting that it was “certainly… a thing.”
