LOS ANGELES – In a stunning pronouncement Friday, cultural commentator Bill Maher revealed that Western Civilization is now, by all objective metrics, 'uncool,' a status he attributes squarely to the 'radical' sensibilities of Gen Z. Speaking from his 'Real Time' set, Maher lamented that today's youth, particularly those who listen to popular music, are fundamentally misunderstanding the foundational tenets of Western thought by, among other things, enjoying readily available clean water and a stable electrical grid.
“They think Western Civ is all about, like, having a functioning sewage system or something,” Maher explained, gesturing emphatically. “They don’t get that it’s about the Socratic method, the Magna Carta, and the inherent superiority of a society that invented the spork, not about whether your TikTok loads instantly.”
Dr. Quentin P. Foresight, Head of the Department of Historical Misinterpretation at the Institute for Perpetual Nostalgia, agreed. “Mr. Maher correctly identifies the core issue: young people are too comfortable. How can one truly appreciate the nuanced philosophical debates of the Enlightenment when one has never had to hand-crank a butter churn while simultaneously fending off a plague?”
Sources close to Maher indicate he is currently developing a 'Western Civilization Immersion Camp' where participants will be denied Wi-Fi and forced to debate the merits of absolute monarchy while subsisting solely on gruel and the occasional Roman numeral. Early reports suggest enrollment is, predictably, low.
